Utrecht Region: Europe’s most competitive region

Monday 27 March 2023 the European Commission announced that Utrecht is the most competitive region of Europe. The European Commission officially revealed the results of the Regional Competitiveness Index 2022 in Brussels. 

Published every three years, RCI ranks Europe’s capital and commercial regions on indicators including macroeconomic stability, infrastructure, health, education, human capital, market size, technological readiness, business sophistication, and innovation. Utrecht has consistently featured in the top 3 since the Index was introduced, and achieves first place for the third time.

Researchers have compared 234 regions in Europe on the basis of 70 indicators. Utrecht scores especially high on education, innovation and market size. In addition, the labor market opportunities of young people in Utrecht are very high compared to other regions.
