Tiny Revelations brings the invisible world of cancer research to life in Utrecht

What does cancer look like under a microscope? And what can microscopic images reveal about the way tumours grow, cells behave and the immune system fights disease? These questions are at the heart of Tiny Revelations, a free microscopic art exhibition by cancer researcher Professor Anne Rios and her team.

Rios, an Oncode Investigator, professor at Utrecht University and group leader at the Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology, wants to bring the world of cancer research beyond the laboratory. Combining striking microscopy images, personal stories and accessible scientific explanations, the exhibition offers visitors a glimpse into the hidden processes that researchers study every day.

For Rios, microscopy is more than a scientific tool. It also reveals beauty, movement and life at the smallest scale. “Microscopy allows us to see what normally remains invisible”, Rios explains. “These images are not just scientific data. They are tiny revelations”.

The exhibition connects science, art and philosophy, exploring topics including tumour growth, organ-like structures grown outside the body and immunotherapy. It also highlights the importance of curiosity-driven research: fundamental questions about how cancer works often form the foundation for future breakthroughs and new treatments.

The exhibition is presented by The SuperNatural Foundation and will take place at the Nicolaïkerk in Utrecht.
